P.S 54 Curriculum for 2025-2026

English Language Arts (ELA)

HMH Into Reading

P.S. 54 uses HMH Into Reading as our core English Language Arts curriculum. This program is based on science-backed research that shows how students learn to read and write.

HMH Into Reading provides clear and structured instruction in foundational reading skills, including phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The curriculum follows a research-based scope and sequence and supports students as they grow into confident readers and writers.

Teachers in Grades K–6 use this program to support both emerging and developing readers. Lessons can be adjusted to meet the needs of all students while providing meaningful reading and writing experiences.

Mathematics

EnVision Mathematics

Our math curriculum, EnVision Mathematics, is aligned to the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards. Instruction focuses on problem-solving, reasoning, and conceptual understanding.

Students engage in:

  • Hands-on, problem-based activities
  • Lessons that build deep understanding of math concepts
  • Differentiated instruction and intervention support

In Grade 5, P.S. 54 also participates in the Algebra for All initiative. Student data shows that these math approaches support strong student growth.

Teachers also use strategies such as Number Talks, Number Strings, Dot Talks, and math discussions to deepen understanding and encourage mathematical thinking.

Science

Amplify Science

P.S. 54 uses Amplify Science as our core science curriculum. This program is aligned with New York State Science Learning Standards and uses inquiry-based instruction.

Students learn science through hands-on investigations, reading, writing, and discussion. Lessons focus on real-world problems and help students build science knowledge while also strengthening literacy and critical thinking skills.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

P.S. 54 uses a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to support the academic and social-emotional needs of all students. MTSS is a proactive framework that uses student data to guide instruction and intervention.

Teachers use assessments, classroom data, and observations to identify student strengths and areas of need. Support is adjusted based on ongoing progress monitoring to ensure students receive the right level of support.

WIN (What I Need) Periods

As part of our MTSS framework, P.S. 54 uses WIN (What I Need) periods during the school day. WIN periods provide time for targeted instruction based on student needs.

During WIN time:

  • Students work in small, flexible groups
  • Instruction is based on current data
  • Groups change as students make progress

WIN periods allow students to receive extra support in reading, writing, or math, as well as enrichment opportunities when appropriate.

MTSS Programs and Interventions

Students receiving additional academic support may participate in one or more of the following programs:

S.P.I.R.E.

S.P.I.R.E. is a structured literacy reading intervention that supports students who need additional help with reading. Instruction focuses on phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Phonics for Reading

Phonics for Reading provides targeted instruction in phonics and decoding skills. It supports students who need extra practice to build reading accuracy and fluency.

Fundations

Fundations is a multisensory phonics program used primarily in the early grades. It supports letter-sound relationships, spelling patterns, and early writing skills.

Sounds Sensible

Sounds Sensible provides small-group instruction focused on phonemic awareness and sound-letter connections. It supports students who need additional practice with early reading skills.

Step Up to Writing

Step Up to Writing is a structured writing program that helps students develop strong writing skills. Students receive repeated practice in:

  • Foundational writing skills
  • The writing process
  • Informative, opinion, and narrative writing
  • Research skills
  • Strategic use of technology
  • Collaborative writing

Our Instructional Approach

At P.S. 54, instruction is data-driven, flexible, and responsive. Teachers collaborate to review student progress and adjust instruction as needed. This approach helps ensure that all students are supported and challenged in meaningful ways.
